Submitting Work to Howling Dog Press

Howling Dog Press does not return unsolicited manuscripts.

It’s wise to query first by e-mail, and explain what it is that you would like to submit, and wait to receive a reply. When sending hard copy, send Photocopies only: Author’s name, address, e-mail address, webpage, phone number prominent. Simultaneous submissions to other publishers are encouraged.  It takes us a long time to get back to writers.  Don’t wait on us. If something you’ve submitted to HDP gets picked up by another publisher, just let us know that it should no longer be considered.

We don’t critique; if there were 48 hours in a day, we might be able to get around to critiquing your work or giving you advice. We honor the mottoes, “Sometimes the best advice is no advice at all,” and “There are two kinds of people in the world: Those who don’t know, and those who don’t know they don’t know.”

Considered for acceptance are poetry, fiction, plays, non-fiction, essays, and satire. Any work selected for publication could be considered for different applications. For example, we might accept an excerpt from your novel to run in OMEGA, but not  commit to publishing the novel in its entirety.

Unless you are superior in conveying satire, better label it as such or we might think you don’t know what you’re doing—at first writing of this piece, I stated that we could possibly think you’re an idiot. Regardless, we know good satire when we read it, and most can’t write it.

We also accept sample chapters of novels of high merit; send the first 10 pages, 10 pages from the middle, and the final 10 pages.  Accompanying that material, send a character overview and a plot synopsis.  We like plot.  We like well constructed characters.  We like motive. We like tension, conflict, rising suspense, and matters of profound social or political conscience.  Personally, I don’t like being put to sleep, and, if it means anything to you, I have the final word on  90% of what Howling Dog publishes.

We do not accept literary criticism, mysteries, romance, navel-gazing, cowpoke, godsquad, up-the-organization, the vapid, the tepid, the ridiculous, or the condescendingly aloof. Howling Dog Press is interested only in tough, hard-hitting, politically, philosophically, socially, and/or historically significant work.  At one time, we considered “experimental” writing, but most of it was so poorly conceived and executed that it ultimately eroded into literary masturbation, at best. We don’t publish “word salad,” so send that useless, pretentious, crap to August what’s his face. Neither do we publish polite essays about George Bush being misguided, guided by angels, etc.. Content, uniqueness of voice, subject matter, stance, passion, and impact impress us.  Time’s short—we don’t finish reading bullshit.

As Daniel Berrigan famously said: Know where you stand and stand there.

If it’s not clear where you stand, please send your work somewhere besides here.  If you don’t know where you stand, we have no interest in figuring it out for you.  If you’re not sure what your message is, we’re confident that we aren’t either.  We’re not interested in doublespeak or misinformation in the names of either the greater good or higher art.  Generally, it bodes well to read the works of writers that the publisher has already published, just to get an idea of what the publisher is interested in.  You can see the HDP list below.  Likewise, you will see links to the individual issues of OMEGA, Howling Dog’s online literary journal.  Have a read and you might be able to determine whether we would have an interest in your work. We appreciate fresh voices and fresh faces.  Don’t send us dead poetry.

Submissions can be e-mailed, if guaranteed virus-free, to:
